Audi is no stranger to Super Bowl commercials, and in 2019 they kept their winning tradition going with a humorous 60-second spot from San Francisco-based creative agency Venables Bell & Partners.
Depicting a man reuniting with his grandfather at a mountaintop homestead, the ethereal ad seems to good to be true when the grandfather pulls a tarp off an Audi e-tron GT concept car. The lights power up, the engine revs and the man… jerks back in his seat, because he’s not behind the wheel of an electric sports car, he’s getting the Heimlich maneuver at his cubicle after choking on a cashew. It was too good to be true, after all.
The ad, which aired in the second quarter, was meant to highlight Audi’s commitment to having one-third of all new vehicle models be fully electric by 2025. “A thrilling future awaits,” the ad says after the choking man catches his breath. “On Earth.”
"Audi has a history of creative that reflects what's happening in American culture," Loren Angelo, VP of marketing at Audi of America, said in a statement. "With the story of electrification growing, we wanted to introduce the e-tron to viewers, but also leave them with a memorable ending, and ultimately, get them excited about an electric future."
Audi’s comical “Cashew” commercial is a departure from the serious tone the automaker took in its two previous Super Bowl spots in 2016 and 2017 (Audi sat out the Big Game in 2018).
