In “Less Talk, More Bitcoin,” Coinbase’s first-ever Super Bowl commercial, we see nothing but a color-changing QR code bouncing around a black screen for a full minute. A peppy synth-pop song created for the ad serves as the soundtrack.
On Super Bowl Sunday, the QR code directed viewers to a page on Coinbase’s website that offered $15 in free bitcoin for signing up. So many people scanned the code—20 million, according to Coinbase—that the website crashed at one point during the game.
“Less Talk, More Bitcoin” won a Grand Prix at the 2022 Cannes Lions Festival. It was directed by David Shane for Dentsu Creative.
