Doritos used rappers to define its ad for the second year in a row, and this year, the PepsiCo-owned snack brand’s spot focused on an Old West showdown… kind of.
The 60-second ad stars singer Lil Nas X and actor Sam Elliott engaging in a dance battle replete with horses, spurs and whip-crack sound effects—it’s winner-take-all on the duelling grounds, and “all” is a bag of Cool Ranch Doritos.
Appropriately titled “The Cool Ranch” thanks to its dude ranch-esque setting, the spot from Goodby, Silverstein & Partners is set to “Old Town Road,” Lil Nas X’s chart-topping country-rap hit and features a cameo from Billy Ray Cyrus, who recently released a remix of the song. It aired in the game’s third quarter.
Last year, the chip brand’s Big Game ad starred Chance the Rapper and the Backstreet Boys performing a version of the group’s ‘90s hit “I Want It That Way.”
Doritos was one of two Frito-Lay brands to appear during Super Bowl LIV, with Cheetos also getting a spot for the first time in more than a decade. Both were handled by Goodby and relied on support from rappers, with the latter featuring MC Hammer.
