Expensify’s first-ever Super Bowl commercial stars rapper 2 Chainz and actor Adam Scott and was billed as the world’s first “expensable” music video.
The 30-second rap video was the brainchild of New York creative shop JohnXHannes, Ad Age’s 2019 Small Agency of the Year that was also behind Squarespace’s Emmy-winning Super Bowl ad from 2017.
In “Expensify This,” 2 Chainz boasts about expensing everything in the music video, from a seafood tower to an ice-covered supercar, until Scott, playing a record label accountant, taps on the car’s window and reminds the rapper that he’ll need paper receipts for, well, everything.
“Nah, I have Expensify for that,” 2 Chainz says, taking a photo of a receipt. Super Bowl viewers could snap a picture of the receipt and upload it to Expensify for a chance to win the $200,000 Ice Car that appears in the ad.
While Expensify’s spot added to JohnXHannes’ roster of ads, founders John McKelvey and Hannes Ciatti parted ways less than a year after the Super Bowl LIII ad aired, dissolving their agency due to creative differences.
