Broadcast early in the game, Hulu’s 30-second Super Bowl ad is all about the third season of its dystopian original series “The Handmaid’s Tale,” based on a 1985 Margaret Atwood novel of the same name.
But this year is not the first time the hit show starring Elisabeth Moss has been advertised during the Super Bowl.
In recent years, Hulu has opted to use its Big Game ads to showcase original content. In 2017, the streaming service also promoted “The Handmaid’s Tale” (prior to its season 1 premiere), while in 2018, it aired a spot for the Stephen King-inspired original series “Castle Rock.”
Hulu is one of the three major streaming services that took out ads during Super Bowl LIII; Netflix and Amazon Prime Video also touted their own original series’ with commercials that aired later in the game.
