Quicken Loans secured “Aquaman” star Jason Momoa for its 2020 Super Bowl ad, though the commercial quickly takes an unexpected turn as the actor settles in at home.
The 60-second ad from Chicago-based agency Highdive “reveals” Momoa—who’s played superheroes, outlaws and all-around tough guys—to be a total wimp. In the comfort of his own home, the second-quarter ad shows him to be a weakling, as he removes his prosthetic biceps, six-pack abs and flowing hair to reveal a skinny, balding individual.
“Home is where you feel the most comfortable, and Rocket Mortgage helps you feel comfortable financing that home,” a voiceover says.
“It’s always fun to see what somebody is like when they’re at home,” Casey Hurbis, CMO at Quicken Loans, which owns the Rocket Mortgage brand, told Ad Age. The commercial’s idea ties into the company’s mission to “put Americans in homes.”
The hilarious ad came fifth in USA Today’s Ad Meter ranking and gave Highdive, which also handled Jeep’s Ad Meter-winning “Groundhog Day” spot, two top-five commercials in this year’s closely followed poll.
