Stella Artois keeps its tradition of celebrity cameos going with this humorous commercial starring two classic ‘90s characters.
The Anheuser-Busch InBev brand’s spot sees both Sarah Jessica Parker and Jeff Bridges reprise their roles from “Sex and the City” and “The Big Lebowski,” respectively. In it, Carrie Bradshaw and The Dude buck their drinks of choice—cosmopolitans and White Russians—instead opting for glasses of Stella Artois (or in The Dude’s case, “Stella Ar-toes”).
The 45-second ad from Mother New York is filled with subtle references to both the movie and TV show. For instance, the bartender's name is Gary, which is also the name of the bowling alley barkeep in “Big Lebowski,” and The Dude wraps up the ad with his signature phrase, "The Dude abides."
It ran in the second quarter of Super Bowl LIII.
The week before the game, the brewer released a pre-Super Bowl teaser for its ad featuring Parker in a 15-second clip that also plugged the brand’s partnership with Water.org (that charity was the focus of Stella’s ad last year). Another teaser came in the form of a vague tweet from Bridges about “living in the past”—so vague that some interpreted it as the actor hinting to a “Big Lebowski” sequel.
“Change Up the Usual” is one of nine spots that AB InBev aired for its alcohol portfolio during Super Bowl LIII; its other brands that got the Big Game treatment were Bud Light, Budweiser, Michelob Ultra and Bon & Viv Spiked Seltzer.
