Singer Doja Cat stars in “The Grande Escape,” Taco Bell’s Super Bowl LVI commercial about a group of clowns who break out of a prison-like clown school. They shed the trappings of clownhood—the over-the-top makeup, the ridiculous outfits—and delight in their newfound freedom before heading to Taco Bell.
The spot amounts to Taco Bell taking a jab at its competitor McDonald’s, home of clown mascot Ronald McDonald. (As an added dig at McDonald’s, the clown school’s ice cream machine is revealed to be broken at the start of the spot.)
Doja Cat’s cover of Hole’s “Celebrity Skin” serves as the soundtrack of the 30-second spot, which was produced by Deutsch LA and appeared in the fourth quarter of the game.
Yum Brands-owned Taco Bell’s most recent Super Bowl ad, “Bigger Than Futbol,” promoting its Quesalupa menu item, ran in 2016.
