Volkswagen returned to the game for the first time since 2014 with an ad that marked its 75th anniversary of entering the U.S. The spot leveraged VW’s place in American pop culture to spark sales momentum for its growing lineup of modern electric vehicles. The ad, called “An American Love Story,” began by reenacting the German-born Beetle’s U.S. entry on Jan. 17, 1949. It also included references to Woodstock and the 1968 Disney movie “The Love Bug.” It was directed by Lance Acord, whose credits include VW’s classic 2011 Super Bowl spot “The Force.”
