AT&T's ad for Super Bowl XXXIII out of Interpublic Group of Companies' Foote, Cone & Belding offers up a montage of high-energy, middle-class people doing high-energy, middle-class activities -- including jogging, riding the train, parenting and tracking stocks. A voice-over intones, "Finally, communications has caught up with the way you live. Introducing AT&T Personal Network." Which was basically consolidated billing -- for wireless, long distance, calling card access (remember calling cards?) and internet access.
The ad followed on the heels of 1998's winning tale of the new digital rumor mill, "Bobby Templeton."
It would be another three years before AT&T would bring ads for mobile phone service to the Super Bowl under the mLife sub-brand ("Accountants," "Farmer," "Grandfather," "Belly Buttons").
