Budweiser’s “True” tagline stems back to its iconic “Whassup” campaign that DDB Chicago created in 1999. But another of the brand’s agencies was responsible for spinning off the slogan into its own series of commercials. In 2001 Goodby Silverstein & Partners adopted the catchphrase for an that featured a group of guys recounting a time they almost were attacked by a rabid dog. Following that spot’s premiere, Anheuser-Busch marketing exec Bob Lachky asked the other agencies on its roster, including DDB Chicago, to come up with ads that played on that Seinfeldian theme of telling “funny because they’re true” stories, like this spot about what happens if someone takes "How ya doin?" seriously.
The talkative visitor of this ad would return in Super Bowl XXXVII to get a safe ride home ("Designated Driver").
