Don Johnson, three months from the series finale of "Miami Vice," and Wayne Gretzky, who'd won four Stanley Cup championships so far, nudge people from Pepsi to Diet Coke. The height of the Cola Wars is on full display: Johnson is a former Pepsi endorser. And, of course, Diet Pepsi also had its say in several ads of its own in Super Bowl XXIII.
Both brands would keep up the fight in 1990's Super Bowl XXIV with ads like "Just One Reason," starring Paula Abdul and Elton John in duet for Diet Coke.
Gretzky would be back in the Super Bowl 11 years later for Budweiser's designated driver message "Zamboni."
