Long before Doritos began its epic and influential run of consumer-generated Super Bowl ads ("Live the Flavor," "Check Out Girl"), the PepsiCo brand and Omnicom's BBDO New York were doing just fine selling the snacks themselves. Witness Ali Landry, Miss USA 1996, emerging here as an overnight sensation as Sean Hayes, in one of two Super Bowl XXXII ads that year (see also Bud Light's "Shopping"), and a friend look on.
Landry told Yahoo years later that she walked into the audition without any idea what was about to happen:
I couldn't believe it. It was my very first commercial. They told me it was going to be on during the Super Bowl. I don't think I'd ever watched the Super Bowl before. My father's a big football fan, but I didn't know the commercials during the Super Bowl were a big deal.
So, we shot the commercial, and it was great and really fun, and I just thought it was really cool that I got a job. And then literally the next day, I had people calling me to see if I could sing, because they wanted to offer me a record deal. It was that crazy.
Landry appeared in Doritos Super Bowl ads again in 1999, setting off library sprinklers, and 2001, with "Tennis," a play on "Laundromat."
