"Security Guard" outdid "Ghost Town," E-Trade's other spot in Super Bowl XXXV, as far as participants in USA Today's annual Ad Meter exercise went. In fact, it outdid every commercial in the whole game but Bud Light's "Date," starring Cedric the Entertainer.
But it wasn't as popular as "Ghost Town" among ad writers at The New York Times ("The real surprise was that it ran at all," Stuart Elliott wrote) or Ad Age ("This is from Goodby Silverstein?" Bob Garfield said). And over time it would be overshadowed by "Ghost Town," which crystalized a moment for many.
