VF Corp.'s Lee Jeans ran a pair of ads via Fallon McElligott in 1993 that use humor to stand out amid the usual barrage of beer, auto, snack and soft-drink ads. In addition to its successful executions -- "Inhale" and this one both made the top 5 on USA Today's annual Ad Meter popularity contest -- Lee benefited from a lack of rival clothing companies in Super Bowl XXVII (excluding Nike and Reebok, which focused on sneakers).
That's actor Alan Cumming ("The Good Wife," "Cabaret") as the guy arriving for the date in "Silhouette," something he would recall on his website later:
I was a Lee Jeans boy! My friend Paul Weiland directed this.
He had previously directed me in the BBC film Bernard and the Genie, and shortly after he came to see me in a play in London, La Bête. We walked to our cars and he was driving a swanky BMW and I was in my beaten up Citroen 2CV. I think he felt sorry for this starving artist and so put me in several of his commercials over the next few years. Bless him!
