MasterCard assembled classic advertising mascots including the Pillsbury Doughboy, Charlie the Tuna, the Jolly Green Giant, Count Chocula and Mr. Peanut for its 2005 Super Bowl ad, “Icons.” Viewers would see a similar pack-em-in approach in Met Life’s 2012 “Everyone,” only with a different cast -- the likes of Charlie Brown, Mr. Magoo, Richie Rich, He-Man and Voltron -- and a message about financial security for all types. MasterCard and agency McCann Erickson really just wanted to find another “priceless” moment, here “getting everyone together for dinner,” and give consumers a commercial paying homage to commercials -- very Super Bowl-ian.
MasterCard rival Visa would use beloved intellectual property in Super Bowl XXXIX as well, for comedic effect ("Super Heroes").
