Before Super Bowl advertising was know for big ideas, special effects or soaring anthems, Miller Brewing came to the 1983 game ready to play: This spot makes an uplifting, musical montage of the longtime High Life slogan "Miller Time."
"Miller Time" and the line "If you've got the time, we've got the beer" originated with McCann Erickson in 1971, then appeared in commercials, ads, bar signs and promotions to greater or lesser degrees over the years, first for High Life and then for Miller Lite. Ogilvy & Mather used it in a 2000 campaign for Miller Lite, for example. Lite put "Miller Time" back in the spotlight in 2012, too, in a campaign via DraftFCB and Saatchi & Saatchi.
As far as beer anthems go, the execution here is a fairly pristine example of the form. For another Super Bowl entry in the genre, see also Budweiser's "Neighbors" from 2001.
Miller Brewing would be back in the big game with the Lite ads "Train" in 1984 and "Respect" in 1985.
High Life got another crack at the Super Bowl, in a way, with a one-second ad on some local NBC affiliates during the 2009 game ("One Second Ads").
