In this 11th-hour addition to the Super Bowl XXXIII ad line-up, a Mitsubishi Montero Sport is shown navigating the open road -- and off-road -- of a rugged Western landscape to the muscular guitar riff of Ozzy Osbourne's "Crazy Train." (See Ozzy in a different light in Pepsi Twist's 2003 Super Bowl ad "The Osbournes.") At the same time, an urgent message in stark white type flashes across the screen, divided up into four parts: "The golf course... doesn't count... as getting back... to nature." Apparently golf-shaming was already a thing in 1999.
Created out of Deutsch, an independent soon to become part of Interpublic Group of Cos., the 30-second spot includes a tagline -- "Wake up and drive" -- familiar from the campaign introducing the Mitsubishi Galant sedan the previous August. Mitsubishi and Deutsch would be back in the Super Bowl in 2004 to promote the Galant, as a matter of fact, with a neat stunt ("Freeway").
