California winery Paul Masson Vinyards, part of the Seagram Company, proves that beer isn't the only kind of booze that can benefit from Super Bowl advertising. Here "Citizen Kane" director Orson Welles lends his gravitas to the cause, as he had since the 1970s, intoning at every opportunity, "We will sell no wine before its time." Welles also endorsed Jim Beam, Perrier, the Vivitar Compact Camera, Carlsberg beer, Stove Top stuffing and Domecq sherry, among other brands.
Wine (of a sort) would make a Super Bowl return eight years later when E. & J. Gallo bought time for Bartles & James ("Bugle"), by which point Seagram had sold its wine portfolio, including Paul Masson, to Vintners International.
