Subway returned to the big game in 2002 but this time confronted rival sandwich chain Quiznos in a Super Bowl for the first time. On its team for "Interruption," by Messner Vetere Berger McNamee Schmetterer Euro RSCG in New York, Subway again started nerdy dieter Jared Fogle.
The spot presents Fogle essentially heckling a nearby table of guys, already Subway customers, about the fat-free qualities of Subway sandwiches as they fail to recognize the neo-celebrity in their midst. It went up against comparative Quiznos advertising ("Dart," "Guillotine") where toasting is the most important thing.
