Panera Bread has announced Mark Shambura as its new chief marketing officer. 

Shambura comes to Panera from Papa Johns, where he had been CMO since 2023. He previously worked at Mod Pizza and Chipotle.

Shambura officially assumed the CMO role at Panera on July 29. He oversees brand building, digital and loyalty, product strategy and consumer insights, and reports directly to CEO José Alberto Dueñas.  Drayton Martin, Panera's senior VP for brand building, will remain in that role, Panera confirmed. 

Papa Johns could not be reached for comment on who will replace Shambura. Last week, the pizza chain named Todd Penegor its new president and CEO. Penegor had held the same titles at Wendy’s.

Shambura joined Panera as the chain, like others, has been trying to woo back customers who are tired of high prices. In April, Panera simplified its menu and highlighted meals under $10. Panera also recently made headlines for its Charged Lemonade drinks, which the chain dropped after they led to multiple wrongful death lawsuits for the high amount of caffeine.

Panera is owned by JAB Holding Company, which also owns Keurig Dr Pepper, Pret, Peet’s and Krispy Kreme.
