Sam’s Club’s top marketer resigns

Ciara Anfield has resigned as chief membership and marketing officer of Sam’s Club, a spokesman for the retailer confirmed. The spokesman declined to comment on the timing of Anfield’s departure or plans for her replacement. Anfield has been in the role since 2022. She did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Sam’s is a unit of Walmart, and its top marketing post in recent years has been filled by executives from its bigger sibling. Anfield, who had been VP marketing of Sam’s Club since 2020 and at Walmart since 2008, succeeded Tony Rogers; Rogers had been CMO at Walmart U.S. before taking the Sam’s position, when he left the company in 2022. But the past two CMOs of Walmart U.S., including current CMO and Target veteran William White, have been outside hires. While dwarfed by Walmart, Sam’s is a top 10 U.S. retail chain in its own right, with sales of $86.2 billion last year, up 2.3%. That was slower than Walmart U.S.’s 5% growth to $441.8 billion. But Sam’s grew faster in the fiscal first quarter ended April 30, with comparable-store sales, excluding fuel, up 4.4% compared to 3.8% for Walmart U.S. Check out the latest Ad Age events and award programs
