Psyop’s 2021 portfolio put on full display its knack for breathtaking visuals and stunning animation. The company, which celebrated its 21st birthday this year, played a role in one of the biggest brand moments of 2021: Facebook’s Meta reveal, featuring Mark Zuckerberg and his metaverse doppelganger. The company’s latest work by duo Todd + Kylie and Kyle Cassidy for Travel Oregon from Wieden+Kennedy is a feast of gorgeous imagery reminiscent of Studio Ghibli films including “Spirited Away” and “Howl’s Moving Castle.” The film instills a sense of awe and wonder that has been missing as many are still reticent about traveling during the pandemic. A campaign for Taco Bell via Deutsch L.A. from director Luca Vitale took similar inspiration from Japanese-style anime, targeting a young, gaming-forward audience. The work carries over the same spectacle but adds an emphasis on plot and universe-building through an ambitious “Transformers”-style battle between a group of young heroes and Nacho Fry-hungry monsters. The company also proved its staying power with the return of Aldi’s beloved Christmas character, Kevin the Carrot, working with the brand and McCann London for the sixth year running. Yet another Todd + Kylie production, the story reimagined Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol,” starring Ebanana Scrooge, without forgetting a cameo from Kevin as the Spirit of Christmas.
