Find Out if Santa Has Been Framed in Tool's Interactive Apple TV Game for Adults
Classic Characters Get an R-Rated Twist
Editor's Pick
Taking advantage of the Apple TV platform's new interactivity, Tool has designed a Christmas-themed murder mystery game aimed at a "mature" audience.
"Christmastown," which was designed pre-holidays, but has only just been released in the Apple TV app store, is a noirish interactive story with shades of "True Detective" and "Die Hard," set in a town near the North Pole. It places the user in the detective's seat, interviewing suspects and uncovering clues to find out what really happened and whether Santa Claus has been framed. The visuals are based on the 1960s Rudolph TV special, but characters have been updated and reimagined in a stop-motion style and given what Tool calls an "R-rated sensibility." And it's definitely not suitable for kids -- the story concerns the grisly murder of Santa's head elf, who's chillingly found with all his teeth removed. What's more, Santa has a drug problem and Frosty the snowman is recast as the local drunk.
