We live in uncertain times at the end of 2017. After last year's reinvigorating Greenery, Pantone's 2018 color of the year is a mysterious, stormy-looking purple, Ultra Violet.

Pantone describes the shade as "dramatically provocative and thoughtful" and says it "suggests the mysteries of the cosmos, the intrigue of what lies ahead, and the discoveries beyond where we are now." It points to purple's role in counterculture and artistic individuality, with its association with artists like Prince, David Bowie and Jimi Hendrix, as well as to its mystical or spiritual quality, sometimes associated with mindfulness.

"We are living in a time that require inventiveness and imagination," says Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, in a statement. "From exploring new technologies and the greater galaxy, to artistic expression and spiritual reflection, intuitive Ultra Violet lights the way to what is yet to come."
