Design Army has put together yet another eye-popping film for the Hong Kong Ballet, celebrating the group’s 45th anniversary with a whimsical, gorgeous-looking homage to dance that plays off both academia and sci-fi themes.

Directed by Dean Alexander, the film takes inspiration from references including Degas’ ballerina portraits, the Renaissance age and artistic hip hop. The “Tutu Academy” theme sees the troupe members in university halls, as well as the Tai Kwun plaza and the High Island Reservoir. Eventually, the aliens want a piece of the action—tweaking the pleasant weirdness of the piece even further and giving it a cool modern edge.

“We playfully wondered what [Degas’] work would look like if we brought it to life today,” the agency said. “The result is a story popping with the painter’s gorgeous coral hues mixed with Hong Kong’s heritage red—all juxtaposed with vivid shades of juicy jade, like the head-toe painted alien, that explode with extraterrestrial contrast.”
