Girls Who Code launches ‘GirlJams’ to help girls create their own original AI songs
The Mojo Supermarket campaign aims to get girls generally more comfortable with AI, which tends to be male dominated

Mojo Supermarket continues its innovative work with Girls Who Code by rolling out GirlJams, described as “an AI songwriting experience” that helps girls play around with artificial intelligence, a field that’s largely male dominated.
Created with digital studio Buttermax, GirlJams invites girls to create a song using multiple AI technologies, while also learning the basics of AI generally.
User supply a prompt for the subject matter of the song, and ChatGPT generates the song title and lyrics. They also input the genre of music (pop, hip-hop, etc.) and the feel of the song (upbeat, soulful, etc.)—as well as a prompt for Stable Diffusion to create the album art.
GirlJams then produces a demo of the song for users to share.

It’s a timely effort, as the gender gap in AI was made evident in a New York Times piece this week that profiled industry leaders—and included only men.
“Artificial intelligence—with all its potential and power—is simply too important to be left solely in the hands of men,” said Tarika Barrett, CEO of Girls Who Code. “We’ve already experienced the consequences of a lack of diversity in various tech sectors, from bias to ineffective products to unchecked hate speech. But with AI in its early stages, we have the opportunity to make sure that never happens again.”
Barrett added: “With GirlJams we want to provide girls with an educational, fun and creative introductory experience to get them interested in AI while learning its basics, and perhaps shifting their perceptions and even fears of it.”
GirlJams was created with support from Lyda Hill Philanthropies. It follows Girls Who Code’s pledge, made with the White House on International Day of the Girl in October, to spark tech interest in 200,000 girls and non-binary people. Girls Who Code has also released a newly developed AI curriculum for those interested in learning about it.
“GirlJams is an AI-powered experience that uses songwriting to show girls how AI works … and more importantly, to get them actively messing around with it,” said Namwan Leavell, senior copywriter at Mojo Supermarket. “AI tools like Chat GPT and Stable Diffusion are things these students have probably heard of, but haven’t had an incentive to experiment with. With GirlJams, we wanted to create an all-in-one experience that girls actually want to take part in, while learning these tools in a fun, low-key way.”
