Hilarious ads for windshield glass show what it’s like without it

A windshield is one of those must-haves if you’re going to be driving a car. But Erich & Kallman’s amusing new campaign for Auto Glass Now imagines life without one—and it isn’t pretty. Four spots show folks trying to drive—and have conversations—while getting pummeled in the face by high winds. The sight gags alone are pretty hilarious, but what really makes the spots work is the asinine banter, including great comic timing, throughout. Eric Kallman, the agency’s co-founder, told Ad Age that they tried using two large industrial fans blowing right at the actors, but that didn’t work. “We had a dozen leaf blowers on set, and after trying to figure out how to position them a bunch of different ways, the winning solution was for each cast member to have one in between their legs pointing straight up at them,” he said. They were a little concerned about capturing the audio, but in the end, that was a breeze. “A few of the lines are wild lines we captured with the fans off, but mostly it’s their in-camera performances. I still can’t believe it worked,” said Kallman. “Our first campaign as a fully integrated Auto Glass Now is purposefully bold and humorous to break through and bring something fun and distinct to the category—showing the personality behind the brand,” said Kyle Ankrom, Auto Glass Now’s VP of marketing. Beyond the humor, though, the campaign also affirms Auto Glass Now’s speed of service promise, said Ankrom. “It’s built into our name—we’re Auto Glass Now, not auto glass later,” he said. “That’s the key benefit we focus and deliver on, and that’s why when you see the spot and hear the jingle, it’s all about ‘We can get your auto glass serviced now!’” Erich & Kallman’s other recent adventures in lunacy include the comically binary Reese’s Super Bowl commercial and this GoodBoyBob coffee spot with some exceedingly strange lab rats.
