Inter Miami debuts retro jersey by imagining its players in 1981

When you introduce a retro sports kit, it’s tempting to imagine what the club’s modern players would have looked like in the throwback era being represented. Now, Inter Miami has done that—in AI portraits of five stars promoting the club’s Adidas retro jersey. The portraits feature Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, Jordi Alba, Drake Callender and Ben Cremaschi, made to look like an Inter Miami side circa 1981. (The Major League Soccer club was actually founded in 2018.) The players’ hair is their most notable aspect—Suarez, the Uruguayan star, looks downright Maradona-esque. Inter Miami always does well with jersey sales. Messi and Suarez ranked No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, among the league’s most popular jerseys in data unveiled in June. Three other Miami players—Alba, Cremaschi and Sergio Busquets—also made the top 25. The retro jersey is part of Miami so-called “third kit,” after the traditional home and away kits. The team debuted the kit last Saturday in a game against Chicago Fire.
