The bumpy relationship between the two cast members was overshadowed by last season’s ‘Scandoval’ drama

The epic relationship meltdown between Ariana Madix and Tom Sandoval—which became known as the “Scandoval”—dominated the most recent season of Bravo’s reality show “Vanderpump Rules.” But there were plenty of other hurt feelings to go around among the other cast members.

Now, e.l.f. Cosmetics has reunited two of them, Katie Maloney and Scheana Shay, to sit down and hash things out—in the second episode of the beauty brand’s irresistible “Make Up Over Makeup” series, from agency Madwell.

The pair are no longer at their low point. As Shay says at the beginning, things were a lot worse six months ago. Still, they have plenty to discuss in the wake of the last “Vanderpump” season—while applying e.l.f. products to each other.

Much as we saw in the first episode—featuring famous exes Chris Olsen and Ian Paget—the new video provides a great framework for intimate discussion. Applying makeup to someone else is an inherently disarming experience. Madwell chief creative officer Chris Sojka has said the agency’s role in this series is simply to step back and document the experience—without overdramatizing it.

“Our pilot episode of ‘Make Up Over Makeup’ explored what the intimate, disarming act of putting makeup on somebody else might do to a conversation about complex emotions,” Sojka told Ad Age on Thursday. “The result was a very intimate dialogue rooted in honesty. As a company, e.l.f. continuously amazes me with their heartfelt commitment to viewing makeup as a tool for self-expression and empowerment. Their products don’t hide our real selves, they enhance our ability to be who we really are.”

The production on the new video was unique—it used an XR LED wall and Unreal Engine to replicate the backdrop of the Chris and Ian video, which was filmed on an L.A. soundstage. They also shot with five cameras this time, an agency first.

“Since our second episode stars two incredibly famous reality television stars, we decided to create a duplicate of the original set and optimize it to be as honestly e.l.f. as we could imagine,” Sojka said. “Using 3D scanning combined with bespoke models in an Unreal Engine environment, all projected on a curved LED screen, we built ‘the e.l.f. loft’ to become the signature set behind the ‘Make Up Over Makeup’ series. Now we can use that same set anywhere in the world.”

The five cameras, he said, were able to “capture every possible nuance. I don’t think we could have asked for a more real conversation about reality television, friendship and authenticity. That it was all filmed in front of something that’s literally ‘unreal’ only further proves e.l.f.’s mission—all that’s real is who we really are.”
