Kevin the Carrot does 'Top Gun' in Aldi's Christmas teaser
McCann's 40-second spot sees the animated vegetable in a fighter jet with a turkey friend
Editor's Pick
Aldi's "Kevin the Carrot" returns in the retailer's teaser spot for this year's U.K. Christmas campaign, a sort of veggie homage to "Top Gun."
The clip, titled "Peel the Need," sees Kevin in a fighter jet accompanied by his friend, Lieutenant Turkey (a reference to Top Gun's Goose, perhaps?) to a synth-rock soundtrack that recalls the iconic '80s film. Kevin, in his personalized helmet stands in for Tom Cruise's Maverick, showing off his flying moves in the mountains, where the pair even catch a glimpse of Santa. But then disaster strikes and Kevin is ejected from the plane. The spot ends on the hasthag #WhereIsKevin?
Once again, the campaign is the work of McCann U.K. and Psyop directors Todd Mueller and Kylie Matulick.
Kevin the Carrot first appeared in Aldi's advertising in 2016, and over the years he's escaped an evil parship, fallen in love in an Agatha Christie-style murder mystery, watched the John Lewis ad and parodied the Coca-Cola truck. Last year he appeared in a mashup of the Greatest Showman and Peaky Blinders, in a campaign named as the most impactful of 2019 in research by Kantar.
As for the real "Top Gun" sequel we've all been waiting for, that one's been pushed back to summer of next year.
