Mtn Dew brings Gizmo back in ad revival of '80s classic 'Gremlins'
TBWA/Chiat/Day and Calmatic behind campaign for Zero Sugar featuring original stars Zach Galligan and Howie Mandel
Editor's Pick
PepsiCo's Mtn Dew continues its "As good as the original, maybe even better" campaign for its Zero Sugar variant in a new spot that revisits the classic '80s comedy-horror movie "Gremlins."
The campaign kicked off last year with a Super Bowl spot that spoofed "The Shining" and starred Bryan Cranston subbing for Jack Nicholson. This time, however, Mtn Dew and agency TBWA/Chiat/Day New York persuaded two of the original "Gremlins" stars, Zach Galligan (who played hero Billy) and Howie Mandel (who voiced Gizmo the Gremlin) to return.
In the ad, which was directed by Prettybird's Calmatic, a grown-up Billy lets Gizmo try some of his Mtn Dew Zero Sugar, warning him "Be careful." Clearly Billy hasn't learned any lessons at all over the last 40 years however, as Gizmo immediately spills it on his fur and starts spawning new Gremlins. From the eye roll of his daughter as she walks in, we see it's not the first time this has happened.
This time around, the ad wasn't a Super Bowl spot; Mtn Dew's Big Game campaign centered on a $1 million bottle counting contest.
