You wouldn’t know it from his turn as a nature-hating domestic servant in the Apple+ show “Central Park,” but “Hamilton” star Daveed Diggs is a big fan of national parks. To celebrate a three-year trail restoration initiative by General Mills brand Nature Valley, he’s covered and updated The Proclaimers’ ‘80s earworm “I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles).”
Fittingly, he’s paired off with himself, and he and his clone gallivant through the woods while crooning new lines like “But we restored 10,000 miles, and we’ll restore 10,000 more. Nature Valley made these trails accessible so go explore.” Cue chorus, which is now stuck in your head for the rest of the day.
The music video from Mindshare’s content studio Content+ features Diggs and other hikers performing the kind of goofy antics one might see during a karaoke night (remember those?) and showcases one of the few activities still safe to do during a coronavirus surge across much of the country.
The 10,000 miles of trails cover 19 national parks in 16 states, and the brand has renewed its commitment, pledging $3 million to work with the National Park Foundation to restore another 10,000 miles of trails, including the removal of invasive species, repairing structures and building boardwalks. National parks have long been central to the brand's messages. Back in 2012, Nature Valley introduced the "Trail View" campaign that invited took people through various national parks through Google Street View.
“Connecting people to nature is at the heart of the Nature Valley brand,” said Kristin Atherton, brand experience director, Snacks & Natural/Organic at General Mills in a statement. “We are delighted that these restored trails will enable more people to find solace or recharge in America’s treasured national parks and we hope the catchy remake of ‘I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)’ inspires more people to visit a park, get outside and explore.”
