It's a rare feat when an ad about golf gets you excited, much less drives you to genuine, heart-gripping tears, but this latest spot for Nike Golf from Wieden & Kennedy, Portland does just that. The two-minute film, "Ripple," chronicles the athletic aspirations of an Irish boy who worships Tiger Woods. His drive and determination are unyielding as he progresses from playing around with a toy putter in his living room, to hitting balls in his back yard and reaching amateur status. Throughout it all, he closely follows Woods' career, his eyes glued to the TV screen during every competition. That is, until one day, the young boy, now a man, turns out to be golf star Rory McIlroy and finally goes head on with Woods on the professional golf course.
The ad, directed by Steve Rogers of Biscuit Filmworks, has all the hallmarks of Nike and W&K's finest work -- from the triumphant soundtrack to the uplifting story and the nuanced direction. It's meant to show that extraordinary athletes continue to inspire new generations to greatness.
