Secret's brutally honest music video lays out a simple refrain for equal pay
The spot is a partnership with Ladies Get Paid and The Wing
Editor's Pick
Brands have been on the women’s empowerment bandwagon for years--or at least they say they are. But when it comes to putting their money where their press releases are, many fall short. It’s a truth Secret deodorant lampoons in a new music video that breaks down the complex issues of gender parity to one simple refrain: “I’d rather get paid.”
Our lead singer gathers an ensemble of singers and dancers from her dreary office. She offers thanks to the men in charge for their concerns and platitudes, but backs them up against the wall with demands for more money. As much as the guys in the office make, anyway.
Equal pay advocates and celebrities, like actors Sophia Bush and Samira Wiley (the latter of “Handmaid’s Tale” fame), journalist Catt Sadler, Women’s World Cup champion and Olympic gold medalist Abby Wambach and three-time WNBA champ Swin Cash make cameos. The spot, from Wieden & Kennedy, is directed by Raine Allen-Miller of Somesuch.
Women looking for help in getting a raise can visit LadiesGetPaid.com, an equal pay advocacy group that has partnered with Secret to offer a free toolkit with salary negotiation strategies. The organizations will also host workshops across the country at The Wing, the women-only co-working chain.
