Boots' Christmas Ad Is All About Sisterly Love
First Holiday Work From Ogilvy for the U.K. Retailer
Editor's Pick
U.K. retailer Boots focuses on the relationship between two sisters in its holiday ad this year, the first from recently-appointed agency Ogilvy London.
It's not the only retailer to choose sisterly love as its creative theme: House of Fraser's ad also featured a pair of siblings growing up through the years. However, despite the similarities, this one seems more poignant, perhaps thanks to its choice of music, the 1980s hit "Only You" by Yazoo (known as Yaz in the U.S.). The vignettes also show that life has had its ups and downs: a scene of the two sisters as young girls has them sitting in the back of the car as their parents have an argument, and later on they're arguing and fighting as well as hugging, dancing and hanging out together.
The nostalgia is framed by scenes of the present-day with one sister giving another a gift. The other asks: "How did you know?" The tagline of the ad is "Show them you know them."
The ad is also notable in that it includes 11 products popular in the past at Boots in some of the scenes from decades prior, like Seventeen Parma Violet Nail Polish and Natural Collection Banana Moisturising Cream Bath.
Benito Montorio at Pulse directed the film, which stars two real-life sets of sisters in the roles.
