A new campaign from Stamma, the U.K. non profit raising awareness of those who stammer, both captures the reality of how members of the community talk and highlights some of the misconceptions they experience.
The campaign by VMLY&R, taglined "It's How We Talk," includes a film and out of home billboards featuring 17 members of the U.K. stammering community.
The stop motion film, captured by portrait photographer David Vintiner, is voiced by six of the people, capturing exactly how their stammer sounds as they explain some of the damaging comments they have experienced. For example, being asked if they've swallowed a wasp, being accused of being drunk or even of "beatboxing."
The film, produced by Sticker Studios and directed by Daniel Liakh, sets out ot celebrate their difference: as some of them also explain, they don't need fixing or even "that really cool technique you learned in yoga class."
The campaign also includes billboards featuring some of the comments featured in the film, the letters of the words spaced out to indicate how they talk.
"Our polling shows 59% of people are unable to name a character from TV or film who stammers - a startling absence of representation which drives lack of recognition in everyday life," said Jane Powell, CEO, STAMMA, in a statement. “This campaign intends to create greater visibility and understanding within the public. That stammering is just how some people talk”.
