Chinese artist Ai Weiwei, whose work, Sunflower Seeds is currently on display at the Tate Modern, has reportedly been detained by authorities. Ai disappeared on Sunday after trying to board a flight from Beijing.
A state newspaper indirectly acknowledged the detainment, and said: "The law will not bend for mavericks just because of the Western media's criticism. Ai Weiwei will be judged by history, but he will pay a price for his special choice, which is the same in any society."
Last month at TED, Ai watched from his home as organizers played a video that he made and sent to the event in lieu of attending. In it he talks about his situation and about art, the internet and social change in China, noting that his own name cannot even be entered into a search engine in the country.
