Specsavers Sent a Teddy Bear Into Space to Make This Commercial
Simon Ratigan Directs Charming Ad for U.K Optical Retailer Starring a Stratospheric Toy
Editor's Pick
What is it with adland's fascination with space at the moment -- a delayed knock-on effect from "Gravity" and Red Bull Stratos perhaps? In the past week, we've seen a candy-powered space rocket from Japan and a creative embarking on a mission into space, courtesy of FCB Paris. And now, Specsavers has revealed that for its latest campaign, it actually sent a bespectacled teddy bear up into the stratosphere.
The ad, created in-house and directed by Simon Ratigan of HLA, is charming regardless of the space element. It promotes a 2-for-1 offer on kids' glasses at the optical retailer, and depicts all the many ways kids can lose their glasses, from leaving them on a sushi conveyor belt to letting a giraffe eat them at the zoo. And then, there's putting them on a teddy bear strapped to some powerful balloons.
Specsavers plans a whole range of social activity around the #teddyinspace hashtag, and, once the ad goes live on Saturday night, it will release a "Making Of" film on YouTube showing how it was done.
