Stella McCartney's Wonderfully Creepy Fashion Film Is Set in a Clown Motel
Designer Teamed Up With Surrealist Director Phillipa Price
Editor's Pick
Stella McCartney teamed up with surrealist director Philippa Price for a video promoting her SS17 collection, and the result is gloriously creepy.
The film is titled "Uncanny Valley" -- the term used for when something is unsettling because it doesn't look quite right -- and that's definitely its effect. Filmed in the Nevada desert, the clothes are modeled by people wearing creepy clown makeup, listening to TV broadcasts about atomic bombs and visiting the (real) "Clown Motel." They also go to a graveyard and wander zombie-like around a deserted mining town.
Price is known for her hyper-surreal music videos like Banks' "F*** With Myself" and for staging live performances by the likes of Rihanna, and has often said that she is inspired by Salvador Dali. Explaining how the story behind "Uncanny Valley" came about in a Q&A with Stella McCartney's website, she said: "The Clown Motel itself is incredibly weird and wonderful, however I didn't know how inspiring the whole area around it would become."
