Samsung Uses VR to Motivate the U.K.'s 'Worst Soccer Team'
Project Brought Legendary Coach Harry Redknapp to Give a Motivational Speech to Players
Editor's Pick
Is there no end to the uses for virtual reality? This week has already seen the boring experience of being in doctor's waiting room transformed by VR from ZocDoc, and now Samsung uses the technology to help motivate a soccer team. Not just any soccer team, but New Mills AFC, officially the "worst" team in England after not winning a game all season. Samsung gives the players a VR headset each to let them experience a motivational speech from legendary coach Harry Redknapp. To the players in the locker room, it looks as if Redknapp is standing right in front of them on the pitch, giving them the pep talk of a lifetime. See the YouTube 360 video of his speech here.
While the team still lost, it's a stunt that'll appeal to fans of the sport, particularly when the value of top coaches (like Jose Mourinho, who last week signed to coach Manchester United) is a hot topic of debate. DDB Stockholm and ACNE were responsible for the project, part of a series of films designed to explore the possibilities of Samsung's VR system.
