If you’re in search of a stable, high-paying job in advertising, a health care role at an agency could be the answer.

Ad Age searched ad agency listings in September for health care advertising jobs in New York across various sites including LinkedIn, ZipRecruiter and Indeed. Highlighted below are some of the more senior and interesting roles shops are looking to fill in this area, along with sometimes very broad salary ranges they posted. Note that these listings may have been filled or adjusted since they were posted.

What are health care jobs in advertising?

Health care agencies are specialty marketing shops dedicated to pharmaceutical and other wellness companies and brands. While most agencies do not hold two or more accounts in the same industry, seeing that as a conflict of interest, health care is a unique space in that there are dedicated agencies existing only to handle pharmaceutical clients and all their marketing needs—including media, creative, strategy and social media. That’s because it takes a certain level of craft and insight to work with health care brands as they typically operate around very strict advertising regulations.

Why are health care advertising roles in demand?

It may not be the sexiest space, given all the rules and regulations around what you can and cannot claim in a health care ad, but there is a lot of money in pharmaceutical advertising. These companies have a lot to spend marketing to both consumers and medical professionals. Meanwhile, the pandemic forced many health care companies to find new, digital ways of reaching consumers—including through social media and telemedicine—with pharmaceutical companies expected to spend $17.79 billion on digital ads alone in 2023, according to an eMarketer report.

Health care advertising seems to be one of the only areas left unscathed in most economic downturns. During the height of the pandemic, when many agencies underwent mass layoffs, certain holding companies had said they would even move some of their employees to health care divisions to save as many jobs as possible. Even in the current tight job market, Ad Age observed dozens of open health care jobs at several holding companies and agencies.

“The job market is soft in advertising. I had my best year ever last year and that rolled into first quarter of this year. Since then, not so much. There has been a lot of wait-and-see until later this year. Well, it’s later this year,” said Tony Stanol, industry recruiter and president of talent firm Global Recruiters of Sarasota. “As for healthcare, hiring really skyrocketed during COVID. I didn’t have a big book of business in healthcare advertising in 2020, but I quickly caught up. The next year roughly 40% of my placements were in healthcare.”

That said, the health care advertising industry isn't for everyone, Stanol said. “Some creatives can’t stand the mandatories and restrictions. Others thrive in it, taking it as a challenge.”

WPP's VMLY&R Health CEO Claire Gillis said the agency often recruits ad professionals from outside the health care space and “you rarely see them move back.”

Health care remains a bright spot for holding companies and, as such, these agencies are able to hire more, giving it “a larger and larger role in the business” and the ability to attract more top talent, said Sasha Martens, industry recruiter and president of talent firm Sasha the Mensch.

“Health care is booming—and health care communications recruitment is the same,” Gillis said. “But it's more than that. Disruption is part of life in health care, which means that the recruitment landscape is also constantly changing. Competition is always a consideration in a people-based business, but as we recruit across such a large and varied skill base, and range of backgrounds, our talent pool is also extremely large.”

What skills are required for health care advertising roles?

Gillis said constantly evolving medical advancements means that “our clients have more solutions to offer, and more product launches to deliver.” Talent has to be able to enable and communicate these launches “so that these advances really resonate and mean something to people,” she said.

There is also “an increasing focus on using data, creativity and creative communications to make meaningful connections between these medical advances and the people who need them,” Gillis added.

Most marketers have been using data for several years now to better target consumers with relevant information. Health care marketers have been slower in adopting data in their strategies but they're starting to catch up, especially to reach medical professionals including doctors, Omnicom Health Group CEO Matt McNally said.

“So here the real spending-pivot has been from using human salespeople to using digital, non-personal channels, including social, to reach and engage with professional customers,” McNally said. “We’re really looking for talent that’s well steeped in omnichannel, and that’s comfortable and pre-wired to approach things from a data-driven, customer-centric perspective.”

Though ad professionals often make the jump to health care, experience can be an advantage to landing one of these roles.

For most of the health care agency roles Ad Age observed, agencies require candidates to have somewhere between three and 12 years of experience. “Despite ageism elsewhere in the industry, strategists with several years' experience tend to do well in healthcare. Their years of service seem to be appreciated more,” Stanol said.

Depending on the role, requirements range from someone with an extensive medical background to no experience in health care whatsoever. In Ad Age's findings, most creative roles within health care didn't require specific pharmaceutical marketing experience but, for in-house medical directors, essentially the go-to scientific and medical experts for the agency and its clients, for example, candidates needed advanced degrees and several years of experience in the health care space.

Plus, “some roles require very specific disease state focus,” Stanol said, which would require a specific area of expertise.

McNally said Omnicom Health Group has had success in hiring talent from other areas of the industry including “consumer agencies, direct response agencies and digital marketing companies. In a lot of cases, they have valuable transferrable skills, but they have to be open to learning about complicated scientific categories and marketing in a regulated environment,” he said.

Here are a few requirements agencies are looking for in candidates for their open health care jobs, again though, experience varies widely:

• An advanced medical or science degree

• Use of data and analytics

• Social media or other digital skills 

• Knowledge of clinical trials and other pharmaceutical processes

• Specific expertise on a disease state

How much do these health care advertising roles get paid?

Many of the salaries for these positions reflect the demand—several of which are in the six-figure range, according to job openings tracked by Ad Age.

Havas Health & You seemed to have some of the more competitive salaries, offering upwards of $500,000 a year for several of the senior roles it listed. Salaries vary widely, of course, but went as low as $66,000 a year and as high as “$500,000+” a year in Ad Age’s findings.

Stanol noted that typically oncology-focused roles pay more. Ad Age found the salary range for one job opening with an oncology focus, a senior VP and group account supervisor at Omnicom Health Group, is between $200,000 and $221,600.

Like other roles, typically health care advertising jobs in New York pay the most competitively, Stanol said. “This may simply be a function of being where the clients are, close to the New York-Philadelphia pharma corridor. Boston, Philadelphia and California also have a fair amount of healthcare business because their clients are nearby.”

Martens did question, because health care agencies are able to attract more talent than they used to, whether these high-paying salaries will eventually “start to mirror more 'general market' agencies.”

Much depends on the specific role and the company, but here’s a glimpse, thanks to a new law in New York that went into effect Nov. 1, 2022, requiring companies to include good faith pay ranges for all job listings.

Job title: Medical director, Omnicom Health Group
Salary range: $101,500 - $146,900

Omnicom Health Group, part of the Omnicom holding company, is looking for a medical director, essentially an in-house medical expert, to work with pharmaceutical clients on their brand goals as well as lead other initiatives including internal research. The candidate must have one of the following degrees: MD, Pharm.D, or Ph.D, and two or more years of experience in the ad industry.
