The emphasis is on media and media-technology companies, with core competencies in sales, marketing and advertising. In April, the company launched an agency practice to service both traditional and digital agencies, as well as a career-transition and outplacement business. The launch of those businesses, said J.D. Rehm, managing partner, was a proactive approach to the dismal economy. The career-transition and outplacement business was a logical addition, given the number of displaced people in the media and marketing world, Mr. Rehm said. Mostly, those looking to Mercury Group for career transition advice are coming from traditional media -- magazines, newspapers or television -- and looking to shift into digital. As for the agency business, Mercury Group believes agencies will recover more quickly than media companies.

After leaving Vibe, Ms. Watson moved into the executive recruiting space, though Tangerine-Watson also provides mentoring, coaching and career-development services.
"I've been in the business a gazillion years and have seen the ups and downs of people of color leaving at the mid-level. There's no diversity at the senior level," she said. "People that I know that were in the business felt like they were the only ones, with different tales of not being treated well or biases or not feeling like they could break in. There was a need for more supporting, training, development and pure honesty for agencies that wanted to do a better job."
Ms. Watson does believe the industry has made some headway over the last few years. Some agencies have become increasingly aggressive and progressive, she says, and clients are increasingly asking about the staffing of the agencies that are pitching their business, in an effort to increase diversity.

David Wiser started his practice about 15 years ago after working at a marketing consulting firm and in brand management at Procter & Gamble. Wiser Partners focuses on retained executive placements in marketing, sales and consumer insights across categories including consumer goods and services, retail, wireless media and entertainment, hospitality, financial services and health care. Clients have included Amazon, AT&T Wireless, Barclays, Chase, Coca-Cola, DirecTV , Genentech, Nielsen , Panera, Timberland, VF Corp. and Walmart.
About two-thirds of the roles it places are in a CMO, senior VP or VP role, while the remainder are placed in director or number-two-type roles. With a headquarters in Cincinnati, Mr. Wiser says that people assume he's downtown having lunch with P&G execs every day, but that 's not the case. While he admits that P&G and other major package-goods companies develop "phenomenal" talent, his firm is more interested in execs who are "one generation removed." "We're interested in seeing what happens when they leave a P&G or General Mills or PepsiCo and cut their teeth," he says. "Then they become really interesting."
