Ad Age is marking Black History Month 2025 with our fifth-annual Honoring Creative Excellence package. (Read the introduction and all the essays here.) Today, guest editor Kaleeta McDade turns the spotlight to Vanessa Wallace, CMO of Savage X Fenty, who shares “a special message to my post–college graduate self—and to anyone on a similar journey.”
Dear Vanessa,
You were designed for a purpose… on purpose.
At times, you may find yourself the only woman, person of color or Black woman in the room. Don’t be discouraged. Remember this: You belong at the table. You’re there to represent and speak truth to power for so many who aren’t in that room—and to make space at the table alongside you. Carry that responsibility with pride, knowing you’ll help redefine beauty standards by being part of a movement that celebrates bold inclusivity. You’ll show the world that everyone deserves a space to be seen, heard and unapologetically themselves.
Play your game. Throughout your career, you’ll be tempted to compare your journey to those of others—judging your progress by the moves your peers make. Don’t fall into that trap. As your parents would always say on the basketball court, Play your game. Business is no different. You have unique strengths that, when honed, will set you apart. Play to your strengths, work on your opportunity areas and always trust your instincts. Let that be your guide—and stay true to your own path.
Lead through the unprecedented. Life will bring experiences beyond imagination. No case study, playbook or career guide can fully prepare you. You’ll navigate a racial reckoning amid a global pandemic and devastating natural disasters—all within a compressed time frame. In these trying times, lead with empathy and compassion, but don’t forget to be kind to yourself too. Check in with yourself—both your head and heart—and stay committed to your faith. It will provide you strength. Leadership isn’t about knowing all the answers; it’s about being present and grounded for those who look to you for guidance. People may forget what you do or say, but they’ll never forget how you make them feel.
Enjoy every moment—yes, even the challenging ones. The industry is tough, and it’s fast-paced. It’s easy to go from project to project without stopping to reflect. You’ll realize that the work never ends, and real growth comes from embracing and appreciating each moment. Celebrate the wins, no matter how small, and learn from the challenges. Relish the journey. Remember: You are your ancestors’ wildest dream.
Your community will rally around you. Some say leadership is lonely, but it doesn’t have to be. Surround yourself with people who will advocate, pray and celebrate with you. When the time comes to spread your wings after 19 years at Nike, uncertainty may creep in, but leaning on your families—the one you were born into and the one you’ve chosen—will give you the strength to move forward. Their love and encouragement will empower you to step boldly into a new role. As you embark on this new chapter, remember how far you’ve come and how much further you’ll go. You’re not just building a career, you’re creating a legacy.
