If people are afraid of monosodium glutamate, then shouldn't they fear pizza as well? That's the tongue-in-cheek message from MSG supplier Ajinomoto, which planted a conspiracy theorist on TikTok to lay out—jokingly—why pizza should be “canceled” just as MSG was 60 years ago.
As the actor points out in the #CancelPizza campaign from Edelman, MSG is a naturally occurring ingredient in pizza toppings such as cheese and tomatoes. “Our bodies cannot distinguish the difference between the MSG that's in this and what's in this stuff,” holding up a bottle of MSG seasoning.
Indeed, the “glutamate in MSG is chemically indistinguishable from glutamate present in food proteins,” according to the FDA.
