2022 was a tumultuous and challenging year in which advertisers grappled with striking the right tone in an uncertain and polarized world. Just as we began to emerge from the pandemic, Russia waged war in Ukraine, with the effects reverberating around the world; inflation, energy prices and and a “cost-of-living” crisis came to dominate consumer conversations, on top of ongoing incendiary topics such as climate change and gun control.
We also witnessed the rise (and fall) of cryptocurrency, Elon Musk’s wild ride with Twitter, a much-criticized World Cup and the death of the world's most longstanding monarch. Meanwhile, brands and agencies also faced a world of intense social media scrutiny. Many took a serious and purpose-based approach; others helped us escape from our troubles with more light-hearted fare.
