Gatorade Celebrates Its Sports Legacy on Its 50th Anniversary
TBWA Chiat Day Creates a Tribute Reel as the Brand Enters Its 50th Year
Dec 29, 2014
TBWA Chiat Day Los Angeles helps Gatorade celebrate its 50th anniversary with "50," a tribute reel featuring a memorable sports moment for every year the brand has existed.
The spot opens with a nod to the place where it was founded in 1965, as an old-school University of Florida football team counts the first of 50 collective push-ups. The audio carries on into the next 49 athletic highlights -- from the first televised "Gatorade bath" to one of the most legendary NBA slam dunk competitions -- celebrating the sports drinks' support of pro and amateur athletes time and again.
The counting audio disappears momentarily during the 23rd clip, which shows someone sipping Gatorade as its famous 1991 "Be Like Mike" ad and jingle play on a television screen. The ad ends with the University of Florida's modern day Gators football team finishing its fiftieth and final push-up, taking a drink break right before coach says "50 more. Let's do it again."
Viewers can learn more about each iconic highlight from the reel on the interactive YouTube digital extension, created with the help of digital agency VML. More anniversary work and promotional efforts will roll out throughout 2015.
