African Mobile Company Introduces African Emoticons for Android

Oju Africa, a division of mobile company MiFone, has gone ahead and done what Apple promised it would look into: created a whole set of "African" emoji. Earlier, MTV journalist Joey Parker, after seeing a tweet from Miley Cyrus asking for an "emoji ethnicity update," asked Apple why almost all emojis were white -- save for a vaguely Asian looking guy, and a man in what resembles a turban. In response, Apple said it agrees, and is working with the Unicode Consortium to update the emoji set, to reflect more diversity. But MiFone didn't want to wait around. "Oju," which means "faces" in Nigeria's Yoruba language, has launched a set of the Emoticons designed for use on Android, with plans on the way for iOS as well. "We follow global trends but we are differentiated by our authentic African voice. So as a brand we wanted to do something that only Africa could pull off, something that could become so iconic that it would have the world talking," Eserick Fouche, Creative Director at Oju Africa, said in a statement.
