Apple pays tribute to Música Mexicana in surreal ‘Shot on iPhone’ film starring Iván Cornejo

A year after its memorable tribute to lucha libre wrestling, Apple is exploring more Mexican and Hispanic traditions in another “Shot on iPhone” film, this one telling the fantastical tale of a young Música Mexicana singer who tries to overcome a creative block by digging into his cultural roots. Created by TBWA\Media Arts Lab LATAM and directed by Mexican-American directors Cliqua (aka, Pasqual Gutierrez and Raul “RJ” Sanchez), the 13-minute film stars Iván Cornejo, an emerging Música Mexicana artist who embarks on a surreal journey in which characters from the traditional game of Lotería—a fish, the devil and a mermaid—help free him up to write a new song. Cliqua, known for their innovative music videos for artists such as Bad Bunny, Rosalía, J Balvin and The Weeknd, used iPhone 15 Pro features including 5x optical zoom, Action mode and Cinematic mode to shoot the cinematic piece. Also read: Apple tells an epic lucha libre story in first ‘Shot on iPhone’ film produced in Mexico The film also features Música Mexicana artist Eden Muñoz as the frog’s voice, Maria Zardoya of indie Latin band the Marías as the mermaid, and Mexico City-based Camilo Lara as producer and soundtrack composer. The film will run on digital, TV and social in both Mexico and the U.S. In Mexico, there will also be supporting out-of-home ads. There is also the behind-the-scenes video below, showing more directly how the iPhone features were used. Cornejo is a 20-year-old singer/songwriter from Riverside, California, who began posting music online at age 14 and had a single, “Está Dañada,” go viral in 2021. His second album, “Mirada,” launches next week; the song in the Apple film, “Intercambio Injusto,” is the second track on the album.
