Asda's Christmas ad is an ice-skating spectacular

Film set to Ravel's 'Bolero' is first holiday work for the supermarket from Havas

Asda is literally putting its holiday ad on ice this year—It depicts a supermarket that morphs into a giant ice rink, set to ice-dancing classic Ravel's "Bolero."

The spot for the retailer is the first from Havas London, which won the Asda business in May this year after it reviewed out the account of AMV BBDO. In a fairly a stark contrast to last year's effort, which focused on the pandemic and how "Christmas will be different this year," the 2021 ad takes a more escapsim-based approach, although food products remain in the spotlight.

The spot was directed by Scott Lyon of Outsider and choreographed by Daniel Whiston, a former winner and now associate creative director of TV show "Dancing on Ice." It sees a family enter an Asda store, where their shoes are transformed into skates. They then pirouette and glide their way through a series of magical festive moments, from the carol concert to the office party, and the spot culminates in a family-filled Christmas Day. During the ad, viewers will see hero products from the retailer's Christmas range, including its giant Extra Special Chocolate Orange Bauble.

"We didn’t just miss the opportunity to enjoy Christmas dinner together last year—we missed the school plays and the work nights out," said Meghan Farren, chief customer officer at Asda, in a statement. “This year our Christmas campaign is about celebrating all the moments that make Christmas special, and showcasing the amazing quality and range of products our customers can enjoy throughout the festive season. This year we want to help our customers make every moment spectacular. ‘Asda on Ice’ takes everyday moments and turns them into a beautiful performance—and that is just the kind of magic we want to bring our customers this year.”
